John Rhys-Davies wurde am 5. Mai 1944 in Salisbury England geboren. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er nicht nur in England sondern auch viel in Afrika.

John hat einen absoluten Kultstatus unter Fantasy-Fans. Er spielte unter andern in „Indiana Jones“ an der Seite von Harrison Ford, als Professor in Sliders oder auf Deck der Voyager. Seine Karriere startete er vor über 30 Jahren. Er besuchte die „Londoner Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts“ und spielte viele Stücke unter der Schirmherrschaft der „Royal Shakespeare Company“. John wirkte bei über 100 Bühnenstücken mit und auch viele Filme zieren seine lange Karriere. Sein erster Kinofilm war „The Black Windmill“.

John Rhys-Davies hatte sich also bereits ein bekanntes Gesicht erspielt, als er den Herrn der Ringe drehte. Er ist 1,85 m groß und auch sonst eher nicht zierlich gebaut. Trotzdem übernahm er die Rolle des Zwergs Gimli. Sein schönes und bekanntes Gesicht musste er dafür unter einer Maske verbergen. John bekam ein künstliches Gesicht, vor allem um die Augen, um seine Gesicht mehr „Zwerglike“ zu machen. Leider vertrug er diese Maske gar nicht und seine Haut löste sich unter der Maske ab und juckte schrecklich. Das täglich über sich ergehen zu lassen war sicherlich nicht einfach und schmerzfrei. John war von Anfang an überzeugt von dem Erfolg des Herrn der Ringe und er sollte Recht behalten. Nach der Premiere von „Die Gefährten“ sagte er: „Ihr habt noch gar nichts gesehen“.
